It’s definitely possible to have too much of a good thing. That’s apparent as we’re being “entertained” by remakes, spinoffs and sequels. Sure, sometimes having an additional movie is a good idea (Terminator: Judgment Day and Toy Story 2, I’m looking at you) but most of the time these efforts are cheesy ways for the big wigs at top to try to squeeze their cash cow for a few extra dollars. Not that I blame them – if I made tons of money from something that would be easy to replicate I would probably try to do it, too. However sometimes these attempts at continuation are just plain awful and that’s when things get awkward.
Most remakes are horrible and anyone who’s seen the new Planet of the Apes or the latest The Stepford Wives will probably agree. It’s usually better to leave well enough alone and there are plenty of films out there that prove it. As for spin-offs, a new version of “How I Met Your Mother” called “How I Met Your Father” is about ready to debut and it looks lackluster, at best. It most certainly won’t be legendary, even if Neil Patrick Harris makes a few guest appearances. Of course, the “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul” might be promising so perhaps not all spinoffs are terrible. Sequels are also usually that are hit or miss but something recently happened that should make artist wary of creating a sequel to one of their greatest hits. I’m talking about Billy Ray Cyrus’ recent rap release of ‘Achy Breaky 2’.
What. The. Hell. If you’ve seen this new video, you too are probably wondering if Mr. Cyrus got into daughter Miley’s stash of weed during the creation process. Has he learned nothing from the unfortunate heavy metal version of ‘Ice Ice Baby’ that Vanilla Ice let loose upon the world over a decade ago? While it’s very likely that the senior Cyrus is just looking for ways to stay relevant in this new day and age, this recent song release proves that he should be limited to commenting on the antics of his pop star daughter. Speaking of which, he seems to have incorporated her patented twerking into his new video as well, which is a really weird and creepy way of keeping it in the family. All this could perhaps be forgiven if the song was catchy or paid any sort of homage to the country version that launched both he and his family into the world of celebrity super stardom, but this new version of ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ just breaks hearts and makes ears ache.
Sometimes you need to leave the past in the past. Perhaps Billy Ray’s intent was to create a mockery of his only true big hit but not even Larry King could salvage the mess that is this video. It’s almost as if someone took a…wrecking ball…to it. While it’s possible that the entire Cyrus family is punking American culture, it’s more likely that they’re desperate to find ways to keep milking that poor old cash cow. However, there’s got to be a better way to do it. Maybe they’ll have their own reality TV show next? Either way, I just don’t think I understand.
