With March underway, it’s time to finally forget about all things with the words “snow” or “ice” involved. Sure, Michiana may see a few more days reminiscent of the recent winter wallop, but the weather can only get nicer from here. Put those skis and snowboards back into the garage and bust out the boots: it’s time to hike.

Local parks that feature hiking trails may very well still have a dusting of snow on the ground throughout parts of March, but the warmer temperatures will bring days perfectly suitable for getting a little fresh air and navigating through the woods. There are several trails open with many hikers already trudging through the snowy paths.

Most hiking trails in the area are either free or require a fee of $5 less, usually a gate fee, so it’s an inexpensive way to take advantage of this unique section of the calendar as the winter season transitions to spring.
